The reasons to our success![]() The nineteenth Dinard British Film Festival is to take place from 2nd til 5th October 2008. As our twentieth anniversary draws near, let’s take a moment to look back on the reasons of our evergrowing success. The yearly Franco-British Producers’ Meeting has become one of the Festival’s milestones. It has allowed coproductions, projects, exchanges and friendships to develop on both sides of the Channel since 1991. The competition acted as a stepping stone for such major films as Danny Boyle’s Shallow Grave, Peter Cattaneo’s Full Monty, Stephen Daldry’s Billy Elliot, Peter Webber’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, Gurinder Chadha’s Bend It Like Beckham, Asif Kapadia’s Warrior, Paul Andrew Williams’ London to Brighton, and David Mackenzie’s Hallam Foe… Each year, the Stephen Frears-sponsored writing workshop puts together French and British young screenwriters. The workshop is organised in association with Regards Croisés, and the young writers’ benefit from the attending professionals’ precious advice. One of last year’s example is Céline Sciamma’s Water Lilies recent released in the UK. These recurring events make our ties with the UK Film Council and the British Council stronger every year. On the French side, the same sense of trust has developped with the Bretagne Council, the Ille-et-Vilaine Council and the Centre National de la Cinématographie (and our private sponsors). Loyal partners have allowed the Festival to keep a complete and sound control of its fundings over the years. The Festival is also, and above all, that of artists, filmmakers, and actors who honour us with their presence. Such great figures of British cinema as Ken Loach, Mike Leigh, Richard Attenborough, Stephen Frears, Hugh Grant, Vanessa Redgrave, James Ivory, Emily Watson, Nicolas Roeg, Neil Jordan, Jim Sheridan, Peter Greenaway, Jane Birkin, Charlotte Rampling have come to meet our audience and guests. If the Festival Passes go like hot buns well before the film selection is announced, if screening rooms are over 90% full, if the schools’ festival attracts more and more pupils, and if professionals gladly attend every year, it is undoubtedly because the Festival’s choice is to follow the carreer of its films through : from the very first drafts of screenplays, to public screenings, and, as a bonus, a frequent boost towards widespread circulation given by a distributor. British cinema is rich, energetic and wide-open to the world. It is our duty, here in Dinard, to be up to the task, to make sure we remain aware, inventive and loyal to our event. Sylvie MALLET |
