French connection... The Independent recently published an article mentionning a new phenomenon called « The French Connection ». In his piece, Geoffrey Macnab observes that big French production companies, such as Pathé, are more and more involved in UK hits (recent films by Stephen Frears, Mike Leigh, Ken Loach, Nic Roeg).
Another instance of this « frenchification » : Studio Canal has acquired the rights for over 1,400 of Her Majesty’s movie classics. Our industriy’s keen interest also showed in the recent adaptations of British novels by French directors (François Ozon, with Angel by Elizabeth Taylor, and Pascale Ferran, with Lady Chatterley by D. H. Lawrence). But the French also work hard towards promoting their own films in th UK. A French film festival recently took place in London, and was attended by a large delegation of artists and professionals, including Juliette Binoche and Alain Resnais.
This « phenomenon » can only boost our yearly initiative to create new, strong links with our across-the-Channel neighbours. Has it not been the Dinard British film festival’s aim from the start
